Charmin Michelle and Sam Miltich provide duo magic “under the stars” at Crooners on July 16

Note: The Lead Sheet has “retired,” but in its place we present an ongoing Jazz Police Live Jazz Calendar with (at least) weekly update. And at the suggestion of one of our biggest fans, Andrea will present her totally biased “picks” for the week, on a trial basis.

Andrea’s Picks:  Chris Bates always has something new, and now its “Anew Quartet” at Jazz Central with Red Planet cohort Jay Epstein and young upstarts, Peter Goggin and Patrick Adkins (July 10); trumpet king Nicholas Payton pays a rare Twin Cities visit with back-to-back sets at Crooners–with keyboard monster Tommy Barbarella followed by a guest appearance with the Sophia Shorai Quartet (July 13); a perfect pair–vocalist Charmin Michelle and guitarist Sam Miltich perform under the stars in the tent at Crooners (July 16); Maud Hixson and Rick Carlson complete their “songs of the decade” series with the 70s forward, in the Dunsmore Jazz Room (July 20); Connie Evingson reprises her “Sweet Happy Life” at the Jungle Theater (July 21), while JC Sanford and Asuka Kakatani lead their Inatnas Orchestra at Crooners (July 21).
